Our Changing Climate through Numbers: BBC’s Alex Freeman and Jonathan Renouf

Carla Schaffer

Climate change is a numbers game, and three key numbers give insight into how the climate changed over time:

0.85 degrees (the amount of warming the planet has undergone since 1880)
95 percent (the degree of certainty climate scientists have that at least half the recent warming is human-made)
1 trillion tons (the total amount of carbon we can afford to burn - ever - in order to stay below 'dangerous levels' of climate change)

BBC producers Jonathan Renouf and Alex Freeman discuss how they used these numbers to tell a creative, visual story. Their program, “Climate Change by Numbers,” won the Gold Award in In-Depth/Feature Reporting.
