Larry Engel and the Cinematography of Science

Capturing the personalities of scientists and their passion  for their work helps to promote public understanding and appreciation of science.

Larry Engel, two-time AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Award winner for in-depth television reporting, has shared the stories of scientists for almost 30 years as a documentary filmmaker. He also has served as a judge for the awards program for a number of years.

In this video, we follow him into his classroom at American University’s School of Communication, where he shares his love of film and storytelling with his students. Engel discusses how he gravitated towards science documentary filmmaking and what makes a film impactful on those who watch it.
