Katie Campbell on Sea Stars and Science

Carla Schaffer

For over a year, a deadly wasting disease killed off West Coast starfish by the millions. Further north, where waters are cooler, the starfish died at a slower rate. Scientists worked to determine whether the colder temperatures impacted the rate of die-off. Katie Campbell, EarthFix managing editor at Seattle's PBS affiliate KCTS 9, traveled to Alaska to document those scientists researching the largest documented marine disease. Her story, “Is Alaska Safe For Sea Stars?” won the Gold Award in Television Spot News / Feature Reporting.
