Aathira Perinchery on Reporting New Species in India

Aathira Perinchery discusses reporting her FiftyTwo story "Succession," which won the Gold Award for Small Outlet Science Reporting in the 2021 AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards contest. "Succession" follows the discovery of a new bush frog species in India's Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot where the identification of new species is a common occurrence. Through her reporting on the diversity of new species being discovered in India, Perinchery addresses larger questions about evolutionary biology and species classification. Perinchery is the first journalist from India to win the AAAS Kavli award.
